A smart field with no value prints nothing, stops the email until you fix it, or in an automation prints as typed. Add words after the field and the client reads those words instead. A field that has a value always prints the value.
In an email or an automation
- Open the email in Email templates, in a workflow step, or in the composer.
- Type two opening curly braces, the field name, a vertical bar, your words and two closing curly braces. For example, {{event.date|the date we discussed}}.
- Check the preview. It shows a field with a value, so the words only appear when the field is blank.
Insert field adds words for you on the event date, event name, venue and due dates. Edit them in place. A line under the list reminds you of the vertical bar.
In a contract
- In the editor, click a field's pill.
- Click If blank, print... and type the words.
- Click away. The words go into the contract when you send it, and the signer reads them as part of the agreement.
The button is hidden on amounts, on links and on the fields that stop a send, such as the venue. It is also hidden while the signer can edit that field.
What takes no words
Amounts and links never take words, in any of these places. A client should never read a total or a link with nothing behind it. Words typed after one are ignored.
The composer also takes no words on the client's email, phone and company, or on your business name, name and email. With an event picked and no contact picked, it takes none on the contact's fields, the client's names or the event's client name either. Those need a real value in the composer. Pick the contact, or fill the field, and Send unlocks.
A contract refuses to send on a blank amount. A blank booking link in a contract prints nothing and is named in the Send dialog. An automation holds the email on a blank form, proposal or booking link.
Something look off?
Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.
The words don't print
- 1 · Check the field name. A misspelled name still prints your words, so a typo hides until you read the preview.
- 2 · Check for a second set of braces inside the words. Words can't hold braces, a less-than sign or a line break.
- 3 · In the composer, Send stays grayed out while a field with no value can't take words, as listed above. Give that field a value. Words fix the other fields.
