Add a tax class for another rate

Add a second tax, such as a city or alcohol tax, and put it on the items it covers.

3 min read
The short version

A tax class is one named tax with its own rate, such as a city tax or an alcohol excise. Add one on the Sales tax page, then put it on the items it covers. A class does nothing until an item carries it or you make it a default.

01

Before you start

  • If your single sales tax rate already includes this tax, do not add it again. Count each tax in one place.
  • By default only an owner or admin can add a class on the Sales tax page. Anyone with Can edit on Price list can also add a plain class from an item's Tax class list, with Add a tax class. That one asks for a name, a rate and what the tax applies to.
02

Add the class

  1. Open Settings, then Sales tax under Getting paid.
  2. Under Tax classes, click New class. The New tax class window opens.
  3. In Name, type what the tax is called, for example City Tax.
  4. In Rate (%), type the rate. Use 0 if the class charges nothing.
  5. Under Applies to, leave Goods and services on. A tax with it off charges nothing.
  6. Click Save. The class joins the Tax classes list.
The New tax class window with the Name and Rate (%) fields and the Applies to switches.
03

Put the class on an item

  1. Open the item, equipment, service, staff role or bundle that carries this tax.
  2. Open its Tax class list, which is a tick list. Tick every tax that applies, then click Done. Two ticked taxes are charged together, and quotes list each one as its own row.
  3. Where the screen has a Save button, click it.

What More options holds

Default for goods
And Staff default each make this class replace the current default when you save. Leave them off for a tax that covers only some items.
Remit to
Records who you pay the tax to. It never shows on invoices.
What this tax sells (Stripe tax code)
Matters only when Stripe Tax is on. Leave it unset if you are not sure, and Stripe uses its general code.
05

Stop using a class

Turn the class off with the switch in its row. It stays in the list marked Inactive, and you can turn it back on.

Something look off?

Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.

You can't see New class
  1. 1 · The page reads "View only. Your role can't add or change tax classes on this page.", or says Sales tax isn't available to your role. Ask an owner or admin.
  2. 2 · If you have Can edit on Price list, add a plain class from an item's Tax class list with Add a tax class.
The tax isn't charged
  1. 1 · Check the item's Tax class list. A class applies only where an item carries it or where it is a default.
  2. 2 · With Stripe Tax on, Stripe works out the tax from the venue address, and your classes bill only where Stripe can't. See How Stripe Tax decides what to charge.
  3. 3 · For one event in a different place, see Charge a different sales tax on one event.
