Your sales tax rate is the percentage EventSage adds to every taxable item on an invoice. Set it on the Sales tax page, or record that you don't charge sales tax. EventSage holds your first quote, proposal or invoice until one of those is done.
Before you start
- Get your rate from your tax authority or tax professional. EventSage doesn't guess it, because a slightly wrong rate rarely gets noticed.
- By default only an owner or admin can change the rate. A Sales seat sees it with a note to ask an admin, and other roles can't open the page.
- If your total is a state tax plus a city tax, type the total here, or add each tax as its own class. Don't count a tax in both places. See Add a tax class for another rate.
Steps
- Under Your rate, choose I charge sales tax.
- In Your sales tax rate, type the percentage as a plain number. For 8.25%, type 8.25.
- Under Is staffing taxed?, choose Taxed, Taxed only with taxable goods or Not taxed. Choose whether staffing is taxed explains the three.
- Click Save. The card shows Saved.
What the rate does
The rate you save becomes your default for goods, and the Tax classes list marks it Default for goods. EventSage adds it to taxable items on quotes and invoices, and proposals show no tax. A new account starts with a 0% rate that charges nothing, which doesn't count as an answer.
Travel and service charge
If you charge tax on your own rates, EventSage waits for two more answers before your first send. They sit lower on the page, in the Travel, service charge and cancellation fee card. In Travel tax and Service charge tax, choose Taxable or Not taxable. By default only the account owner can answer. Until then, travel is taxed like goods and the service charge isn't taxed. Cancellation fee tax in the same card says whether a kept cancellation fee is taxed.
When Stripe Tax is on
With Stripe Tax on, the section reads Backup rates, and the field reads Your backup sales tax rate. Stripe works out the tax from the venue address, and this rate bills only where Stripe can't. See How Stripe Tax decides what to charge.
Something look off?
Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.
You don't charge sales tax
- 1 · Under Your rate, choose I don't charge sales tax.
- 2 · Click Save. A message reads "Noted, no sales tax on your events." EventSage sets your goods and staff rates to 0%, stops asking, and counts this as your answer.
- 3 · To change your mind later, choose I charge sales tax, enter a rate and save.
- 4 · If Stripe Tax is on, this choice is blocked here. The account owner records it by choosing I don't charge sales tax under How tax is calculated, which also turns Stripe Tax off.
A Check this rate box opens
EventSage asks about a rate under 1% or over 15%, because a small number is often a decimal slip such as 0.0825.
- 1 · Click Change the rate to fix the number.
- 2 · Click Save it if the rate is right. Some real taxes are under 1%.
Save is grayed out
- 1 · Choose I charge sales tax or I don't charge sales tax.
- 2 · For a charging rate, type a number above 0 and up to 100.
- 3 · If the card shows "View only", ask an owner or admin to change the rate.
