With Stripe Tax on, Stripe sets the tax on an invoice from the event's full venue address, so you don't look up a rate for every city. The account owner turns it on in the How tax is calculated card on the Sales tax page. It is optional, and without it EventSage taxes invoices at the rates you type in yourself.
Before you start
- Your business has to be in the US. Stripe Tax is not available for Canadian businesses yet.
- Stripe has to be connected and able to take payments. See Connect Stripe to take card payments. Without a connected account the card isn't shown.
- You need a backup rate above 0%, saved as your goods tax. It bills when Stripe can't price an event. See Set your sales tax rate.
- You need a registration with each state you collect tax in. You get it from the state. EventSage and Stripe don't register you.
Steps
- Open Settings, then Sales tax under Getting paid.
- In How tax is calculated, click Set up. It reads Manage once setup is complete. The Stripe tax setup panel opens.
- Under Your business and what you sell, enter your head office address and choose a preset product tax code.
- Under States you’re registered to collect in, add each state you hold a registration in.
- Click Done to close the panel.
- Choose Stripe Tax. It saves at once and a message reads "Stripe Tax is on for quotes made from now on." If you earlier recorded that you don't charge sales tax, a Use Stripe Tax? window asks you to confirm. Click Use Stripe Tax to replace that answer.
Add a state later
Click Manage to add a state you newly registered in, update your head office address, or end a registration. Add a state before your first event there. Until then an event in that state bills your backup rate.
What turning it on reaches
Stripe Tax applies to quotes made from now on, including proposals accepted and orders placed from now on, even ones sent before. Quotes already shared before you first turned it on keep your own tax rates, and so do their invoices. How Stripe Tax decides what to charge explains what Stripe prices and when your backup rate bills instead.
Turn it off
Choose My own rates in the same card. New invoices then use the rates on the Sales tax page. An invoice Stripe already priced keeps Stripe's figure, and a quote made under Stripe Tax keeps saying tax is calculated on the invoice.
Something look off?
Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.
The Stripe Tax choice is grayed out
- 1 · Read the note under the choices. It says what is missing, such as "Your Stripe Tax setup isn't finished."
- 2 · Fix that one thing. A note about registrations reads "Your Stripe account has no active tax registrations", and steps 3 and 4 above fix it.
- 3 · A note that reads "Add your own sales tax rate first" means the backup rate is missing. Save one, then come back.
You can't change it
Only the account owner can change how tax is calculated. By default an admin sees the current choice without the controls. Ask the owner to make the change.
