Choose how clients can pay you

Pick the ways clients can pay an invoice, from card to check, and fill in the details they need to send the money.

The short version

Clients pay an invoice by card through Stripe, or by a way you tick under Other ways clients can pay. A quote, proposal or invoice does not go out until clients have at least one way to pay.

01

Before you start

  • Only the account owner can change these settings.
  • To take cards, connect Stripe first.
02

Steps

  1. Open Stripe payments. It's under Settings, then Connections.
  2. In Other ways clients can pay, tick each way you accept. The choices are Check, Bank transfer (ACH), Cash and Venmo, Zelle or another app.
  3. Fill in the details under each ticked way. Check asks for Make checks payable to and Post to. Bank transfer (ACH) asks for Bank, Account name, Routing number and Account number. Venmo, Zelle or another app asks for Handle or phone, and Cash asks for When to pay. Each box saves when you click out of it.
  4. Read the line under the list that starts "Your invoices will read". It shows the sentence clients get, such as "Payment by check or cash."

What clients see

With Stripe connected, the invoice shows a button to pay by card. Each way you ticked appears as instructions with the details you filled in. Your screen shows only the last four digits of Account number until you click into it, but clients see the full number.

A way you tick and leave empty still shows its name on the invoice, with no instructions. It also doesn't count toward the check that lets you send.

A client who paid one of these ways can click Let them know you've paid. That files a claim, and the balance stays open until you confirm it. Open the invoice, find Pending claims and click Confirm once the money lands in your account.

Who pays the card fees

Stripe takes its own processing fee on each card payment. 0.1% of each card payment also goes to keep EventSage operating. By default you cover both out of the invoice.

Once Stripe is connected, the Card processing fees card holds a switch, Pass card processing fees to clients. When it is on, a small fee is added to card payments so you receive the full invoice amount, and clients see it as its own line at checkout. Autopay adds it only on a credit card. The added fee is sized to cover both of the fees above.

The switch is not allowed everywhere. EventSage keeps it off for businesses registered in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Puerto Rico, and it isn't available for Canada yet. Card networks add limits of their own. Ask your own advisor which rules apply to you.
