Set a venue's sales tax

Pick the tax events at a venue are offered, so you can apply it to an event in one click.

The short version

A venue can hold a sales tax, and every event held there is offered that tax in one click. The venue never applies it on its own, so picking a venue for an event changes no price.

01

Before you start

  • By default an owner or admin adds the taxes on Sales tax. Guide to sales tax walks through it.
  • Save the venue first. Add a venue shows how.
  • You need Can edit on Price list. Without it you can read the venue's tax but not change it.

Steps

  1. Open Venues, open the menu on the venue's row or card and choose Edit.
  2. In the Edit venue dialog, find Sales tax.
  3. Click the box under the sentence "Events at this venue offer this tax in one click." A list of taxes opens.
The Sales tax section of the Edit venue dialog with the box that picks the tax events at this venue are offered.
  1. Tick the tax. To offer two taxes together, tick both. To offer none, tick None. Events at this venue are offered no tax.
  2. Click Done. A message confirms the tax is saved for the venue. It saves at once, so you don't need Save changes.

The list holds only taxes that are switched on, set to Always taxed and not a staffing tax. If two ticked taxes share a rate, a question asks whether they are really two separate taxes, because charging both charges that rate twice.

03

Use the venue's tax on an event

Open the event's Billing tab. In Sales tax for this event, a line names the venue and says it "is set to" the tax. Click Use it for this event to set that tax on the event.

The click recalculates the event's quote and its unpaid invoices, including ones already sent, so a sent invoice can go up or down. It sends nothing and charges nothing, but reminders, the pay link and autopay then use the new amount. Charge a different sales tax on one event covers choosing a tax by hand.

04

Events in another state

An event in a different state or province from your business, with no tax of its own, can show a header notice that it charges the same sales tax as your other events. Click Choose its tax on the Billing tab to set one. The notice blocks nothing.

05

Delete or turn off a tax a venue holds

A tax a venue holds can't be deleted. The message reads "This tax is set on 1 venue. Turn it off instead." Turning off a held tax, or moving it off Always taxed, opens a dialog titled "Some events or venues use a tax this changes". It says how many venues hold the tax and that events there won't be offered it. Click Continue to go ahead or Cancel to stop.

Something look off?

Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.

A line under the box says events aren't offered the tax

The venue keeps its tax, and the line names the reason, such as "is turned off" or "is no longer set to Always". Ask an owner or admin to switch the tax back on, or choose another one.

You can't change the tax

The section shows the tax and the sentence "Only someone who can set up items can change this." Ask the owner for Can edit on Price list on the Roles tab. Change what a role can see and do shows how.

An event shows no offer
  1. 1 · Open the event's Location and check that it shows the venue from your library.
  2. 2 · The event may already hold that tax, or your role may not change the event's tax.
