An event can charge its own sales tax instead of your default. Pick it in the Sales tax for this event card on the Billing tab. This is for accounts on their own rates. With Stripe Tax on, Stripe works from the venue address, as How Stripe Tax decides what to charge explains.
Before you start
- Add the tax first. See Add a tax class for another rate. The list offers only taxes that are switched on and set to Always taxed. A 0% tax is allowed, for a place with no sales tax.
- Your account needs a default tax set to Always taxed. An event's tax applies only while it has one.
- Anyone with Can edit on Price list can choose an event's tax. Sales can do so only while the event is in the pipeline.
Steps
- Open the event from Leads or Booked Events.
- Click the Billing tab.
- Find Sales tax for this event, below the Sales tax exemption card.
- Open the tax list under the status line, tick the tax this event should charge, then click Done. Use my default goes back.
- Click Save. The card reports what changed.
What the event's tax replaces
The tax you pick replaces your default tax and its staffing copy on this event, and any item or staff role's own tax class. An item or role set to Never taxed, or to 0%, stays untaxed. Whether staff are taxed stays your account's answer. A staff default that is neither your default tax nor that tax's staffing copy keeps its own rate.
What a change does to money
Changing the tax recalculates the event's quote and unpaid invoices, including sent ones, so a sent invoice can go up or down. The change sends and charges nothing. Reminders, the pay link and autopay then use the new amount.
The card names each sent invoice that changed, so send it again for your client to see the new amount. A paid invoice is left alone and named.
Use the venue's tax
If the event's venue holds a tax, the card says "<Venue> is set to <tax>." and shows Use it for this event. One click sets that tax and recalculates, with no Save. Picking a venue never changes an event's tax by itself. See Set a venue's sales tax.
When EventSage reminds you
An event in another state shows the notice "This event is in another state" until a tax is chosen. It never blocks a send. If your default rate is right there, tick your default tax. That clears the notice, and your default then replaces each item and role's own tax class, as above. Use my default does neither.
Something look off?
Work through each check in order. Most fixes take under a minute.
You can't change the tax
- 1 · "Only someone who can set up items can change this." means your role can't.
- 2 · "Your role can only change events that are still in the pipeline." means the event has moved on.
- 3 · Either way, ask an owner or admin.
The tax you want isn't in the list
- 1 · Check the Tax classes list on the Sales tax page. A tax set to Never taxed or Taxed with goods, a tax switched off, and a staffing copy are not offered.
- 2 · To mark an event exempt instead, use the Sales tax exemption card above.
The card says invoices were priced under a different tax
- 1 · Click Update invoices. It recalculates the quote and unpaid invoices again.
- 2 · Send any invoice the card names as already sent.
